The Name Project seeks to understand how our names shape our character and the role it plays in our identity.
Some reflect our cultural backgrounds.
Others are indicative of our parents’ values, interest and ideologies.
In this week's Name Project, Matthew Dempster of Jamaican descent from Queens, NY beams with pride in regards to being apart of the cultural fabric of one of the world's most culturally diverse cities. Yet, in a juxtaposing sentiment, Matthew acknowledges the realities of being a black man in America with a "white-sounding" name and the role it played in the opportunities he was granted. For those of us not born into White America, there's always this awareness and looming pressure to identify with what's "acceptable" and in some ways conform in order to play the game at society's programmed standards.
We all have a name, that subsequently has a story. Here is Matthew's name story.
