The Name Project seeks to understand how our names shape our character and the role it plays in our identity.
Some reflect our cultural backgrounds.
Others are indicative of our parents’ values, interest and ideologies.
This week’s Name Project features singer, actor/comedian and baby hair queen Skye Townsend. Skye whose last name garners a lot of attention, is actor and director Robert Townsend's daughter. Although the child of a famous actor Skye holds her own on screen; her humor and talent have certainly been achieved by her own merit. What she has gotten from her father however, is his conscious disposition, being careful of the work she puts out as an actor of color. "Now I fully understand that it's really important for me to be cautious of the work that I accept, knowing that my dad's entire career was based on self-respect and not making images that made people of color look silly. My dad was one of the only black male comedians who did not put on a dress. He really stood for something, he would say "Listen, our images are so powerful -we have to be cautious of what we put out there because kids are always watching." So I think people always associated the Townsend name to staying true and making positive images for people of color."
We all have a name, that subsequently has a story. Here is Skye's name story.
