The Name Project seeks to understand how our names shape our character and the role it plays in our identity.
Some reflect our cultural backgrounds.
Others are indicative of our parents’ values, interest and ideologies.
This week’s Name Project features Geronimo Nicholas Collins. Geronimo is a transgender man who chose the name Geronimo because it represents strength and courage; two things he knew he would need during this transition. "Initially I knew I was taking a risk, I was taking a big leap. I knew that there's a possibility that I could lose people that I love and who I knew loved me. I said well, let me take something that represents courage. If you know the name Geronimo, you think of the Apache warrior by the same name and also the activist Geronimo Pratt. Two very courageous men of their time. I said, let me pick a name that definitely defines strength. So that's how I got Geronimo."
We all have a name that subsequently has a story. Here is Geronimo's name story.
